Melaleuca for Pet Owners
Amphibians
Frogs & Salamanders- Extremely sensitive to chemical exposures, especially large amounts. Never use over the counter products to clean terrarium or terrarium components/ornaments (plants, rocks, logs, etc.). To clean terrarium, remove animal and components. Dilute 1 oz. of Sol- U-Mel with 16 oz. of water and pour into terrarium. Scrub inside of terrarium with soft brush and let sit. Repeat if necessary. Rinse with water and let dry thoroughly. Soak terrarium components in bucket of warm – hot water with added capful of Sol-U-Mel, scrub if necessary. Rinse components with water and let dry thoroughly.
Toads- Can be very sensitive to chemical exposure of any kind. Never use bleach as this can cause toxic shock syndrome. To clean terrarium, remove animal and terrarium components/ornaments (plants, rocks, logs, etc.). Spray inside of terrarium with diluted mixture of 1 oz. of Sol-U-Mel with 16 oz. of water. Scrub clean with brush. Repeat if necessary. Rinse with water and let dry thoroughly. Soak terrarium components in bucket of warm – hot water with added capful of Sol-U-Mel, scrub if necessary. Rinse components with water and let dry thoroughly.
Birds
Cages must be cleaned every day to prevent disease and infection. To clean the bird cage, remove the animal and removable cage components. Remove the soiled cage liner or newspaper and spray bottom with regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel, wipe dry. Replace liner or newspaper;, use a 1:100 dilution of Sol-U-Mel sprayed once per week to the absorbent fodder material on the bottom of the cage . Scrub perches with regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel. Clean food and water dishes with Lemon Brite as directed, rinse thoroughly. Wipe down surfaces with Tough & Tender Wipes and remove fecal build-up.
Once per month, remove tray, grate, perches, nests, toys, and other material from cage. Use 1:1 ratio of Tough & Tender and Sol-U-Guard in hot water to scrub cage parts. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Rinse with clean water and let dry thoroughly.
WARNING! Some exotic birds are sensitive to the aromatic oils in T36-C5.
Cats
Baths- Use Pro Care Pet Shampoo as directed. For quick wipe downs, dilute 1 TSP of Pro Care Pet Shampoo in warm water, soak wash cloth and gently rub down cat from head to toe and dry off with hand towel. Add 1 drop of TC36 Melaleuca oil to water in summer months to keep coat and skin parasite free.
Fleas - For general protection, wash all cat bedding in washing machine with 2 capfuls of Sol-U-Mel and 1/8 cup MelaPower. Add 2 oz. of Sol-U-Mel to 16 oz. of water in trigger sprayer and apply to areas where cat sleeps or rests to repel fleas and deodorize. If infected, add 1 capful of Sol-U-Mel to warm bath water, use Melaleuca’s Regular Herbal Shampoo to lather cat from neck to tail. Repeat process again in 3 days and once more 3 days after that to kill any remaining pupa in skin. Vacuum carpets thoroughly and spray Sol-U-Mel on carpets and furniture every 2-3 days for two weeks.
Fungus & Parasites- If infected, add 1 capful of Sol-U-Mel to warm bath water, use Melaleuca’s Regular Herbal Shampoo to lather cat from neck to tail and rinse. Spray coat with ½ regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel. Consult vet if problem persists for more than a week.
Kitty Litter Box- Clean box at least once a month using a 2:1:2 mixture of regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel/Tough & Tender/Sol-U-Guard. Spray or soak kitty litter box , scrub clean, rinse and let dry. Spray and wipe surrounding area with same mixture to kill parasites and illuminate odor.
Deodorizer – Use Sol-U-Mel in place of Febreeze and toxic air fresheners. Spray on furniture, carpets, curtains, and walls and wipe clean. Kills dust mites on your curtains and pillows/mattresses, and in your carpets (therefore reducing allergies and asthma in both feline and human).
Urine- Use Sol-U-Mel full strength directly on cat spray. Wipe away with Tough & Tender wipes or regularly diluted Tough & Tender and a paper towel. Spray area with mixture of regularly diluted Sol-U-Guard and Sol-U-Mel to prevent repeats. (If repeats occur, consult your vet).
Dogs
Baths- Use Pro Care Pet Shampoo as directed. For quick wipe downs, dilute 1- 3 TSP of Pro Care Pet Shampoo in warm water, soak wash cloth and gently rub down dog from head to toe and dry off coat with hand towel. Add 1 - 3 drops of TC36 Melaleuca oil to water in summer months to keep coat and skin parasite free.
Dog Parks- Take Clear Defense Wipes or gel to dog park to sanitize hands after pet clean-up. Use pre moistened towelettes with regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel to wipe off coat and paws before going home.
Fleas - For general protection, wash all bedding in washing machine with 2 capfuls of Sol-U-Mel and 1/8 cup MelaPower. Add 2 oz. of Sol-U-Mel to 16 oz. of water in trigger sprayer and apply to areas where dog or cat rests to repel fleas and deodorize. Add a capful of Sol-U-Mel to bath water as well. If infected, add 1 – 2 capfuls of Sol-U-Mel to warm bath water, use Melaleuca’s Regular Herbal Shampoo to lather dog from neck to tail. Repeat process again every 3 days for two weeks to kill any remaining pupa in skin. Vacuum carpets thoroughly and spray Sol-U-Mel on carpets and furniture every 2-3 days for two weeks to kill adults and larva in fibers.
Joints- Use Oligo Hip & Joint Treats for dogs to keep dogs’ joints young and strong. For senior dogs, supplement with ½ dose of Replenex daily to keep cartilage and meniscus healthy and strong.
Skin – Use Oligo Skin & Coat Treats for dogs to keep skin healthy and coat shiny. Use Renew lotion for dogs with extremely dry skin and sensitive pads.
Equine
Baths- Use Pro Care Pet Shampoo as directed. Add 4-6 drops of TC36 Melaleuca oil to water and spray on coat and mane in summer months to keep flies and parasites down.
Bridle and leather gear- Use Rustic Touch to clean and condition leather.
Fly Repellent - Mix 2 oz. of Sol-U-Mel with 16 oz. of water. Spray directly on the animal. As mentioned above, works effectively on fleas as well.
Ferrets
Cages and litter box/newspaper must be cleaned every day to prevent disease and infection and to keep odor to a minimum. To clean the ferret’s cage, remove the ferret and removable cage components. Remove the soiled newspaper or litter box and spray bottom with a mix of regularly diluted Tough & Tender and Sol-U-Guard, wipe dry. Replace newspaper or litter box. Scrub levels with regularly diluted Tough & Tender or wipe with Tough & Tender Wipes.
Dishes- Clean food and water dishes with Lemon Brite, rinse thoroughly every other day or when needed.
Hammocks and Bedding-Wash once per month or when dirty in hot water with MelaPower 6x Laundry Detergent as directed. Add 1 capful of Sol-U-Guard to laundry if needed.
Ladders & Levels- Wipe down surfaces with Tough & Tender Wipes and remove fecal build-up, food residue, and oils. Remove and wash every 4 to 6 weeks in 3 – 4 gals of hot water with 2 capfuls of Sol-U-Guard and 1 TBS Lemon Brite. Scrub , rinse, and let dry.
Deodorizer – Use Sol-U-Mel in place of Febreeze and toxic air fresheners everywhere except in cage. Spray and wipe down furniture, carpets, curtains, and walls. Kills dust mites and other parasites and reduces allergens. Use Wax Melts in main portion of house to hide Ferret odor.
Fish
Aquarium – Use a 1:1 mix of Tough & Tender and Sol-U-Mel in hot water to clean drained aquarium, scrub clean, rinse, and let dry. Use regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel to clean the filter and aquarium ornaments, rinse and let dry. Use Clear Power to clean outside glass.
Livestock
Fly Repellent - Mix 2 oz. of Sol-U-Mel with 16 oz. of water. Spray directly on the animal. As mentioned above, works effectively on fleas as well.
Reptiles
Terrariums – Reptiles are extremely sensitive to chemical exposure, use caution when cleaning terrarium. Never use over the counter products to clean terrarium or terrarium components/ornaments (plants, rocks, logs, etc.) as this could lead to reduction of bone density, lethargy, and death. Remove fecal matter and debris every day. Wipe down with Tough & Tender Wipe once a week or as needed.
Monthly, remove reptile from terrarium. Remove carpet or lining (if applicable) and clean with regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel and 1 capful of Sol-U-Guard. Let dry. Scrub ornaments in ½ and ½ regularly diluted Sol-U-Mel and Sol-U-Guard, rinse, and let dry. Dilute 1 oz. of Sol- U-Mel and 1 oz of Sol-U-Guard with 16 oz. of water and pour into terrarium. Scrub inside of terrarium with soft brush and let sit for 10 minutes. Pour out water and rinse. Repeat if necessary. Let dry thoroughly and replace washed and dried ornaments.
Rodents
Hamsters, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Mice, Rats - To control odor in or around a small animal's cage or to prevent communicable diseases, dab T36-C5 or spray a 1:20 diluted solution of Sol-U-Mel around the cage (but not in the cage) 2 or 3 times each week.
Rabbits - To clean their cage, mix 2 oz. of Sol-U-Mel with 16 oz. of water. Spray on cage and on the bottom tray to clean and deodorize. Scrub clean with brush. Rinse with water.
